1999 White Water Rafting

Again, this year, we went White Water
Rafting. On June 19, 1999 three members of the
Salem Bible Church joined twelve of us from the
Athens Bible Church on a trip along the
New River in southern West Virginia. We were
split into three groups of five. There were
also two other rafts of 6 folks per raft from the Toledo
& Michigan area ( strangers to us ).

The water level was below normal and so this year's
ride was slower and alot less
dramatic than last year's trip when the river was flooded.
One of the treats of the day was
what our guide called "surfing" when we intentionally
positioned our raft over an "hydraulic"
which held us in place and wouldn't turn us loose.
Personally, I really enjoyed it when
our guide decided to go swimming and left the raft to me.
I hadn't gotten to control a boat
( or raft ) on a river since my teen years. It was alot of
fun maneuvering the raft with paddles.
