Lower City of Jerusalem: Archaeology and Daily Life in the Time of Jesus

A Biblical exploration of the Lower City of Jerusalem.

Lower City Archaeology and First-Century Daily Life

The Lower City, located on the eastern slope of the western hill, was home to Jerusalem’s working-class population during the Second Temple period. Archaeological excavations reveal modest dwellings built with rough stone, shared courtyards, cisterns, storage pits, and small workshops where artisans labored. The area’s narrow streets and stepped alleys reflect the dense urban fabric of first-century Jerusalem. Numerous household items like pottery, loom weights, oil lamps, and stone vessels provide insight into the daily routines of ordinary families. This district housed the crowds who filled the streets during festivals and gathered around Jesus as He taught. The archaeological remains illuminate the social and economic backdrop of the people who heard Jesus gladly, forming the living context of many Gospel scenes.

A Place of Hunger for Truth
