Elijah: The Still Small Voice

A devotional reflection on Elijah hearing God’s gentle whisper.

Bible Characters

God speaks in quiet moments. Elijah expected God to speak through dramatic signs, yet God revealed Himself in a gentle whisper. His story teaches us that God often speaks in stillness, calling us to quiet our hearts and listen.

But the LORD was not in the wind… nor in the earthquake… nor in the fire. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

And after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:12)

Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)

Christian Application

This devotional encourages believers that God is near in silence. When we slow down, we hear His voice more clearly. Set aside quiet time today to listen for God’s voice.

Sample Prayer

Lord, quiet my heart so I may hear You. Speak to me in Your gentle whisper. Amen.

Hymns for Bible Characters

This devotional pairs well with the hymns Be Still My Soul by Katharina von Schlegel, I Need Thee Every Hour by Annie Hawks, and Near to the Heart of God by Cleland McAfee.
