Jericho’s Walls: Fortifications of the Ancient City

An informational overview of Jericho’s ancient walls and their archaeological significance.

Biblical Context

Jericho’s walls appear in narratives of conquest and judgment.

A City Built on Massive Defenses

Jericho was one of the earliest fortified cities in the world. Its defenses included a steep earthen rampart, a retaining wall at the base, and a mudbrick wall atop the rampart. These fortifications created a formidable barrier for any attacking force. The city’s strategic location near the Jordan River made it a key gateway into Canaan.

Archaeological Evidence

Excavations by Garstang uncovered collapsed mudbrick debris at the base of the retaining wall, suggesting the upper wall fell outward. Kenyon’s later excavations dated the destruction earlier, sparking debate. Grain jars found intact indicate a short siege, matching the biblical account. The site remains one of the most discussed in biblical archaeology.
