John: Leaning on the Heart of Christ

A devotional reflection on John resting on Jesus at the Last Supper.

Bible Characters

Intimacy with Christ grows from resting in His love. John was known as the disciple whom Jesus loved, not because Jesus loved him more, but because John lived most aware of that love. At the Last Supper, John leaned on Jesus, a picture of trust, closeness, and deep fellowship. His writings overflow with the theme of divine love because he experienced it personally and profoundly.

Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. (John 13:23)

We love him, because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us. (1 John 3:1)

Christian Application

This devotional encourages believers that Jesus invites them into the same closeness. He is not distant or cold; He welcomes His people to rest in His presence, listen to His voice, and draw near without fear. Take time today to rest in Christ’s love. Sit quietly before Him, remembering that you are deeply loved.

Sample Prayer

Lord, draw me close to Your heart. Help me rest in Your love and walk in the confidence of being Your beloved. Amen.

Hymns for Bible Characters

This devotional pairs well with the hymns Jesus Lover of My Soul by Charles Wesley, Nearer My God to Thee by Sarah Adams, and I Need Thee Every Hour by Annie Hawks.
