Old Testament Summary

A Summary of The Old Testament Books

The Old Testament opens with God’s creation of the world and closes with Israel waiting for the Messiah. Across its books, we see God’s character, His covenant, His people’s struggles, and the promise of redemption that finds its fulfillment in Christ. Here is a concise journey through each book.

The Pentateuch (The Law)

Genesis The story of beginnings: creation, humanity’s fall, the flood, and God’s covenant with Abraham. It ends with Israel in Egypt, awaiting God’s deliverance.

Exodus God rescues Israel from slavery, gives the Law, and establishes His covenant. The tabernacle becomes the place of God’s presence among His people.

Leviticus A book of holiness. God gives instructions for sacrifices, priests, purity, and worship, showing how sinful people can live near a holy God.

Numbers Israel’s wilderness journey. Despite rebellion and wandering, God remains faithful and leads them toward the promised land.

Deuteronomy Moses’ final sermons. He reviews the Law, calls Israel to covenant faithfulness, and prepares them for life in the land.

Historical Books

Joshua Israel enters the promised land. God gives victory, divides the land, and calls the people to faithfulness.

Judges A cycle of sin, oppression, and deliverance. Israel repeatedly turns from God, yet God raises judges to rescue them.

Ruth A story of loyalty and redemption. Ruth, a Moabite woman, becomes part of the line of David and ultimately the Messiah.

1 Samuel Israel transitions from judges to kings. Samuel leads, Saul becomes king, and David is chosen by God.

2 Samuel David’s reign: triumphs, failures, and God’s covenant promise that his throne will endure forever.

1 Kings Solomon’s wisdom and temple, followed by the kingdom’s division into Israel (north) and Judah (south).

2 Kings The decline of both kingdoms due to sin. Israel falls to Assyria; Judah falls to Babylon.

1 Chronicles A retelling of David’s reign with emphasis on worship, the temple, and God’s covenant promises.

2 Chronicles The history of Judah’s kings, focusing on faithfulness and the temple. Ends with the exile and a hopeful return.
