Paphos and the Conversion of Sergius Paulus

Paphos was the site of Paul’s dramatic encounter with Sergius Paulus.

A Center of Pagan Worship

Paphos was famous for its massive sanctuary of Aphrodite, and archaeological excavations reveal altars, inscriptions, and cultic structures that demonstrate the city’s deep devotion to pagan religion, making Paul’s confrontation with the sorcerer Elymas a direct challenge to spiritual darkness. The contrast between the seductive power of idolatry and the truth of the gospel highlights what Spurgeon often described as the triumph of Christ over the false gods of the age. This setting underscores the spiritual battle that accompanied the spread of the gospel.

The Conversion of a Roman Official

Sergius Paulus, a Roman proconsul, is described in Acts as an intelligent man, and historical inscriptions confirm the existence of a proconsul with this name in Cyprus during the first century, supporting the accuracy of Luke’s account. His conversion marked a significant moment in the advance of the gospel, demonstrating that the message of Christ could penetrate even the highest levels of Roman authority. This event fulfilled Jesus’ promise that His followers would stand before rulers and kings for His sake.

A Clash of Kingdoms

The blinding of Elymas the sorcerer revealed the power of God over demonic deception, and Edersheim notes that this miracle echoes Old Testament judgments where God vindicated His servants before hostile powers. The spiritual confrontation in Paphos showed that the gospel is not merely a philosophical idea but the power of God unto salvation, breaking the chains of darkness. This moment demonstrated the reality of spiritual warfare in the early church.

A Turning Point in Paul’s Ministry

After this event, Luke begins referring to Saul as Paul, and Ramsay suggests that this shift reflects Paul’s increasing ministry among Gentiles and Roman officials. The conversion of Sergius Paulus validated Paul’s calling and opened doors for further ministry across the empire. Paphos thus stands as a pivotal moment where the gospel proved its power in the heart of Roman authority.
