Southern Steps of the Temple: Archaeology and Gospel Teaching Pathways

A Biblical exploration of the Southern Steps.

Southern Steps Archaeology and Pilgrimage Context

The Southern Steps, excavated along the southern edge of the Temple Mount, formed the main public entrance for pilgrims ascending to the Temple. The broad staircase includes alternating narrow and wide steps, intentionally designed to slow ascent and create a reflective rhythm. Numerous mikvaot discovered nearby confirm heavy ritual purification activity. The preserved steps are original first-century stones, meaning Jesus and His disciples physically walked on them. The monumental double and triple gates above the steps match Herodian architecture and align with ancient descriptions of Temple access. This location is one of the most archaeologically certain places where Jesus taught and walked.

A Place of Teaching

Jesus likely taught on these steps, addressing crowds entering the Temple.

A Place of Preparation

Pilgrims purified themselves here, symbolizing readiness to meet God.

Walking Where Jesus Walked

Believers today reflect on the privilege of approaching God with prepared hearts.
