A Massive Defensive Gateway
Nineveh’s walls stretched nearly 7.5 miles, punctuated by 15 monumental gates. These gates controlled access to the Assyrian capital and displayed reliefs of kings, battles, and divine symbols. The Adad Gate and Nergal Gate are among the best known.
Archaeological Evidence
Excavations reveal stone foundations, mudbrick superstructures, and carved guardian figures (lamassu). Inscriptions detail construction by Sennacherib and other kings.
