The Line of Aaron: The Priestly Line Chosen by God
The line of Aaron is one of the most important genealogies in the Bible. It is the line God chose to serve as priests in Israel — the men who would offer sacrifices, bless the people, guard the sanctuary, and stand between God and His people. Scripture treats Aaron’s lineage with deep seriousness, because the priesthood was not a human invention but a divine calling.
The story begins long before Aaron himself, rooted in the tribe of Levi and the promises God made to His people.
The Ancestry of Aaron
Aaron’s lineage begins with Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah.
Jacob → Levi → Kohath → Amram → Aaron
This line is given in Exodus and Chronicles:
- Levi (Genesis 29:34)
- Kohath (Exodus 6:16)
- Amram (Exodus 6:18)
- Aaron (Exodus 6:20)
Aaron is the older brother of Moses and Miriam. All priests in Israel had to come from Levi, but only Aaron’s descendants could serve as high priests.
Aaron’s Immediate Family
Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, from the tribe of Judah (Exodus 6:23). Their sons were:
- Nadab
- Abihu
- Eleazar
- Ithamar
Nadab and Abihu died for offering “strange fire” before the Lord (Leviticus 10), leaving Eleazar and Ithamar to continue the priestly line.
The Priestly Line Through Eleazar
After Aaron’s death, his son Eleazar became high priest (Numbers 20:25–28). Eleazar’s son Phinehas inherited the priesthood after him.
God made a covenant of perpetual priesthood with Phinehas because of his zeal (Numbers 25:10–13). This means the high priesthood was intended to continue through:
Aaron → Eleazar → Phinehas → Zadok → the high priests of Israel
This line is confirmed in 1 Chronicles 6.
The Zadokite Line
During David’s reign, the priesthood became associated with Zadok, a descendant of Eleazar and Phinehas. Zadok remained faithful during Absalom’s rebellion and was appointed high priest by Solomon.
The Zadokite line continued through:
- Ahimaaz
- Azariah
- Johanan
- Azariah (who served in Solomon’s temple)
- Amariah
- Hilkiah (who found the Book of the Law in Josiah’s day)
- Seraiah (killed by Nebuchadnezzar)
- Jehozadak (exiled to Babylon)
This line is preserved in 1 Chronicles 6:4–15.
After the exile, the high priesthood continued through Joshua son of Jehozadak (Haggai 1:1).
The Line of Ithamar
Although the high priesthood belonged to Eleazar’s line, the line of Ithamar also served in priestly roles.
Notable priests from Ithamar’s line include:
- Eli (1 Samuel 1–4)
- Ahimelech
- Abiathar
Abiathar served alongside Zadok during David’s reign but was removed by Solomon for supporting Adonijah (1 Kings 2:26–27). This fulfilled God’s prophecy that Eli’s line would lose the priesthood (1 Samuel 2:27–36).
After this, the high priesthood returned permanently to the line of Zadok.
The Priestly Line in the Time of Jesus
By the first century, the high priesthood had become influenced by politics, but Scripture still traces priestly families:
- Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, was a priest “of the division of Abijah” (Luke 1:5), a descendant of Aaron.
- Elizabeth, John’s mother, was “of the daughters of Aaron” (Luke 1:5).
This means John the Baptist was of priestly blood on both sides.
The New Testament affirms that the Aaronic priesthood was real, God‑given, and honored — but also incomplete.
Christ and the Line of Aaron
Jesus did not come from Aaron’s line. He came from Judah, the royal tribe (Hebrews 7:14).
Yet He is called our Great High Priest — not by genealogy, but by divine appointment “after the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 5–7).
This means:
- Aaron’s priesthood was temporary
- Christ’s priesthood is eternal
- Aaron’s sacrifices pointed forward
- Christ’s sacrifice fulfilled them
The line of Aaron prepared Israel for the true High Priest who would offer Himself once for all.
